Community Nonprofit Oganizations

The centerpiece of public healthcare delivery includes a network of health-related non-profit organizations. Too often, a dearth of these needed agencies exist in less urban parts of our country and/or misunderstanding of how nonprofits operate are held by the funder leading to stress between the funder (federal, state, local government) and the grantee (the nonprofits). Turnover continues to be a challenge for many nonprofits due to the lower salaries and benefits they are able to offer their staffs for roles that have tremendous responsibilities and stressors.
How can we increase the shared outcome of the public health desires rather than approach this critical relationship as funder and grantee? Just as the state’s programs have evolved over time, so have the nonprofits’ mission, capacity, planning, and focus. This separate but very related system requires communication savvy and educated expectations on both the part of the state and the nonprofit.
State’s may also be funded for and/or want to accomplish a particular program idea and discover the ability to locate a nonprofit entity to meet their specific criteria is not possible. Simultaneously, nonprofit entities design their own programs and often need state public health to support their program design and ideas.
Planning together to meet the needs of persons living with disease is important, needed, and often required. However the time and funding to make this happen are in short supply.
